Substation Inspection

Thorough visual and electrical inspection of substation equipment — identifying deficiencies, documenting conditions, and supporting maintenance planning before problems become failures.

Know the Condition of Your Substation

Substations are the critical nodes of any power system — concentrating high-value equipment, high fault energy, and significant safety hazards in a single location. Regular inspection is essential to identify developing problems, verify that safety systems are intact, and ensure that the substation is maintained in a condition that supports reliable operation.

J. Wesley Services Group performs substation inspections that combine visual examination with targeted electrical testing to provide a complete picture of equipment condition. Our inspection reports document findings with photographs, identify deficiencies by severity, and provide actionable recommendations that maintenance teams can use to prioritize corrective work.

Inspection Scope

Visual and Mechanical Inspection

Examination of all substation equipment for physical damage, corrosion, oil leaks, animal intrusion, vegetation encroachment, and structural integrity. Includes inspection of fencing, grounding conductors, equipment nameplates, and safety signage.

Transformer Inspection

Visual inspection of transformer tanks, bushings, radiators, conservators, pressure relief devices, oil level indicators, and cooling equipment. Identification of oil leaks, bushing damage, and cooling system deficiencies.

Switchgear and Circuit Breaker Inspection

Inspection of switchgear enclosures, bus connections, circuit breaker mechanisms, and control wiring. Identification of corrosion, loose connections, damaged insulation, and mechanism wear.

Protective Relay and Control Panel Inspection

Visual inspection of relay panels, control wiring, terminal blocks, and battery systems. Verification that relay targets, indicators, and alarms are in the expected state and that control power is healthy.

Grounding System Inspection

Visual inspection of grounding conductors, ground grid connections, and equipment ground straps. Ground resistance testing to verify that the grounding system meets design specifications and safety requirements.

Infrared Thermography

Thermal imaging of energized equipment to identify hot spots in connections, bus, and equipment that are not visible to the naked eye. Thermography is performed as part of a comprehensive inspection to identify electrical deficiencies that visual inspection alone cannot detect.
