NETA Maintenance Testing

Periodic maintenance testing of in-service electrical equipment in accordance with NETA MTS — keeping your power system reliable, safe, and performing to specification between major overhauls.

What Is NETA Maintenance Testing?

NETA Maintenance Testing Specifications (MTS) define the procedures, test methods, and acceptance criteria for periodic testing of electrical equipment that is already in service. Where NETA Acceptance Testing Specifications (ATS) apply to new installations before energization, NETA MTS applies to equipment that has been in service and is being tested as part of an ongoing maintenance program.

Electrical equipment degrades over time due to load cycling, thermal stress, moisture, contamination, and mechanical wear. Maintenance testing identifies this degradation before it causes a failure — giving operators the opportunity to schedule repairs during planned outages rather than responding to unplanned events.

J. Wesley Services Group develops and executes NETA MTS maintenance testing programs tailored to each facility's equipment inventory, criticality, and maintenance schedule. We provide complete test reports with findings, comparisons to previous test results, and recommendations for corrective action.

Maintenance Testing vs. Acceptance Testing

Acceptance Testing (NETA ATS)

Performed on new equipment before initial energization. Verifies that equipment was manufactured correctly, shipped without damage, and installed per design. Establishes the baseline condition record for all future maintenance comparisons.

Maintenance Testing (NETA MTS)

Performed on in-service equipment at regular intervals. Compares current condition against the acceptance baseline and previous maintenance results to identify degradation trends. Guides repair and replacement decisions before failures occur.

Equipment Covered Under NETA MTS

  • Power transformers and distribution transformers
  • Medium- and low-voltage switchgear and circuit breakers
  • Protective relay systems
  • Medium- and low-voltage cable systems
  • Motor control centers and motor starters
  • Grounding systems
  • Surge arresters and capacitor banks
  • Automatic transfer switches

Recommended Testing Intervals

NETA MTS provides recommended maximum testing intervals based on equipment type and service environment. Critical equipment in harsh environments — high humidity, elevated temperature, heavy cycling — warrants more frequent testing. J. Wesley Services Group works with facility maintenance teams to develop testing schedules that balance reliability requirements with operational constraints and budget.
